The engine lubricating system performs several functions. The oil absorbs some of the shock as certain moving parts change directions. The oil film forms a seal between moving parts such as between the piston and cylinder wall. It also reduces friction by maintaining an oil film between moving parts. Reducing friction reduces heat. The movement of oil around moving parts helps to clean as well as carry away heat.
